Burning Oil
Oil consumption depends on engine power output and fuel consumption. Your engine will consume more oil when you are driving a sportier car or faster or with a trailer to transport heavy objects. Whenever you find out that your vehicle is consuming more oil than before under the same conditions of use, you need to search why this is happening. High oil consumption can cause air pollution and can affect after-treatment devices such as particulate filters and catalysts. Some reasons for higher oil consumption are the following:
- Abnormal piston ring and cylinder wear.
- Defective crankcase ventilation.
- Worn valve seals.
- Abnormal turbocharger wear.
This list is indicative. There are many reasons why your oil consumption might be high. We recommend that you consult a qualified mechanic.
